CartOfficial BitDefender standpoint on GFI issue
On Wednesday, March 2, 2005, the producer of GFI MailSecurity reported a problem which occurred as a result of updating the product. GFI MailSecurity is an e-mail scanning security product, mainly used by companies; it integrates both the BitDefender scanning engines, as well as those of other anti-virus companies. Subsequent to the update, all e-mails received were interpreted by GFI MailSecurity as being corrupted .zip archives, and deleted.
Following an in-depth analysis, BitDefender Labs technicians concluded that the deletion of the messages occurred as a result of the integration interface of the BitDefender scanning engines in the GFI product, an interface which had not been designed by the BitDefender specialists. Until a solution could be identified for the reported problem, the update was immediately pulled back from the GFI servers.
Unlike many other security products which have integrated the BitDefender technology, such as those of Buhldata, a German company, or Hauri, a Korean firm, this incident solely affected the integration of BitDefender with GFI. The users of other products which integrate the BitDefender technology – as well as the users of BitDefender products were not at all affected. Worth noticing is the fact that this is the first and single incident of this kind during the three years of cooperation with the Malta-based GFI company.
“This is a regrettable incident, which we were able to solve within a short period of time due to the cooperation between our specialists. It is a one of a kind event so far, and in order not to go through such trouble again, we have already initiated a unitary testing procedure for all partners who employ the BitDefender technology,” stated Daniel Ionescu, BitDefender CEO.
